The Haulover Sandbar is the most famous boating destination in Miami — a massive, picturesque shallow-water sandbar just west of Haulover Beach Park in North Miami Beach. On any given weekend, you’ll find dozens of boats rafted together, music playing, and groups wading knee-deep in the emerald water. It’s a party, it’s a family day out, it’s a Miami institution.
Getting there
From the marinas of Miami Beach and South Beach, Haulover is approximately a 30–45 minute cruise north along the Intracoastal Waterway. Most self-captained and captained boat rentals include a local-area briefing that will point you in the right direction and cover safe navigation around the sandbar.
What to expect
Haulover is a shallow-water sandbar, not an island — boats anchor just off the sandbar in 3–5 feet of water, and you can step off the swim platform and wade or swim to meet up with other boats. Bring a cooler, bring tunes, bring friends. It’s easiest to arrive earlier in the day to get a good spot, especially on weekends and holidays.
Boats that work well for Haulover
Almost any rental from Miami Beach can make the Haulover run. Pontoons and deck boats are especially popular because of their shallow-draft hulls and spacious decks. For larger groups, center consoles and yacht charters offer more room and comfort on the cruise up. Browse our Miami boat rentals or Miami yacht charters to find the right vessel for your Haulover day.
Tips for a great Haulover day
- Arrive before noon for the best anchoring positions.
- Bring a floating cooler or dry bag — everything gets wet.
- Pack sunscreen, a hat, and more water than you think you’ll need.
- Take-out from nearby waterfront spots like Boater’s Grill or Whiskey Joe’s makes for a great lunch on the sandbar.
- Keep an eye on the tide — water depth can vary significantly between high and low tide.
